1925213_10205386398915795_3373547223009750365_nWe’re so thrilled to have Joyce Feustal of Boomers’ Social Media Tutor on the Unboxed Business series this month.  Joyce is perhaps one of the most outgoing, friendly, and helpful people you will ever meet in the Denver entrepreneurial community, as well as the world-wide social media community.  Joyce founded her business as part of passion project and retirement, but also out of a practical need for many Baby Boomers who felt lost and confused when social media came on the scene.

Joyce admits that she can put herself into boxes herself by seeing herself as the secondary income in the home alongside her husband.  Many wives do that, and limit their earning power.  She also found herself boxing herself in by not being tech savvy and not an early adopter of new programs.  She admits that she gets frustrated easily by new technology that she doesn’t use on a regular basis.  Joyce is very different than many entrepreneurs that you will come across in that she is fully retired and Boomers’ is her outlet in retirement.  Sometimes having a more relaxed hustle towards business growth can be a blessing or a box for her.  Either way, Joyce has become an inspiration for us at Tintero Creative that you CAN pursue passions and that retirement is not the end by any means!

Joyce epitomizes the perspective that boxes are opportunities.  She admits that “boxes are more limiting than are opportunities” many times.  However, as we watch her run her business, develop relationships, and pursue learning new skills, we can’t help but think she isn’t seeing what the world sees.  One of the big boxes she finds herself in is that she feels behind on new technologies.  However, she regularly reaches out to peers and industry leaders to learn new skills.  For example, we helped her get set up and understand MailChimp about a year ago.  She’s not willing to admit that she doesn’t know something and ask for help.  That is a huge key to her success!

Joyce will tell you she can be very fearless and she isn’t afraid of breaking down walls.  She simply chooses to ignore the fact that she is the age she is, and simply just be herself, “which is essentially ageless!”  Joyce also follows a lot of social media blogs and publications to stay on top of the latest trends.  She’s also a founding member of Colorado Women In Social Media, which is a Denver social media group founded on the concept of collaboration for mutual business growth in a ever-changing industry.

Joyce’s Advice If You’re Feeling Stuck Right Now:

“Believe in yourself and take more risks.  Don’t stay in a job where your boss and other key leaders don’t respect you or appreciate you.”

“Be open to the ideas of others and follow through on the ones that make sense.”

“Hang out with positive people.  Restrict your contact with negative people.”
