A New Way To Look At Goals January is a popular time to set goals, resolutions, or intentions for the next year. Many are successful at reaching these, but some find it difficult or discouraging to set goals. Changing your focus on your goals may be beneficial to helping you achieve them and bring about the growth you desire.

Let’s take a brief look at a few different way to think about goals.

1. Focus on a System not the goal alone. By focusing on a system or plan to achieve your goal, you will find more success. You make your goal achievable by deciding how you are going to get there. The focus becomes the steps to get there, not the end result. The original “goal” you set becomes the by-product of your system.

2. Look Long-term. Goals may be short-term in nature, but consider what happens once you’ve reached your goal. For example, if you set out to run a half-marathon and complete this race, the chance to stop training is considerably high. However, when you set your sights on long-term results, the half-marathon accomplishment becomes a part of the bigger goal. Consider how your current goals fit in the bigger picture in your life.

3. Take it seriously. If you are serious about setting a goal, take the steps ahead of time to plan. Perhaps research is involved to begin your process. Seek out the accountability of core people in your life to follow up with you. Put appointments (now) on your calendar to check-in down the road. What are those steps you can do now to make the process a success?

As you move forward in 2014, take a few minutes to think about the goals you have set and what your approach will be to achieve them!
