You have only a few seconds, sometimes even split-seconds, to make an impression that may last a lifetime.  Often first impressions are made instantly, so you have to be on your guard and plan for success.  People make first impression judgments about everything they see:  people, products, commercials, homes, tones, etc.  When you are representing yourself, or even trying to represent another product or service, there are a couple of key things to remember about how people make these first impressions of you.

1.  Smile:  Smiling is a simple, but effective way to unconsciously send the message that you are friendly, personable, and likeable.  Smiling also is an activity that involves not only your mouth, but your eyes as well.  Often first impressions happen when someone else is introducing you or you are in a large group and cannot speak.  The non-verbal action of a smile can go a long way!

2.  Firm Handshake:  Many inferences can be made about handshakes.  A strong, but not forceful handshake can tell the world that you are a confident person.  However, an overly forceful handshake tells someone that you are a dominant, forceful person.  On the other extreme, a flimsy handshake gives the impression that you are a meek, under-equipped individual.  Since the handshake is one of the primary forms of introduction in our society, it is important to consider how your handshake comes across.

3.  Speak Confidently:  Manners still matter in our society.  A pleasant “nice to meet you” or “it’s a pleasure” give the impression that you are a professional, polite person who can carry themselves well in society.  Also, speaking confidently about what you do, why you do it, and in turn asking intelligent questions back to your acquaintance is important.  The verbal volleyball back and forth to carry on a good conversation is integral in giving a lasting impression.

4.  Put-Together:  Whether it relates to your wardrobe, your marketing materials, or your website, a put-together look gives an air of professionalism that is instinctual in our society.  Making sure your final product looks complete and professional is so important.  Incomplete appearances give an impression of poor work ethic and laziness.

First impressions are obviously vital in our society today.  They are critical in person-to-person interactions, but they are also important to presenting a product or service.  We understand the high value of a first impression, not only in working with our clients and our realm of influence, but in helping our clients present their product or service with the best first impression.  Plan to make a stellar first impression at every encounter!
