Making The Most of Public Speaking With Strategic Content Marketing | Denver Content Marketing Speaker, Valerie Morris

Any speaking opportunity is a great chance to share your knowledge, practice your speaking skills, and meet new people.  However, many speakers think only about the 20-60 minutes that they are in front of a podium.  They miss out on the amazing opportunity that speaking gigs are for your personal brand and PR.

I was recently invited to speak to a social media marketing class at UNC’s Monfort College of Business.  I prepared a fun presentation on strategic content marketing with blogging.  We explored what content marketing is, why it is important, and why blogging is especially important to a content marketing strategy.  We then looked at four key things that block many people from creating content of any kind, and especially blogs.  Toward the end of the presentation, I discussed one key point about what to do with content once you have created it:  repurpose it.

Presentations you prepare are similar to blogs or other white papers you write in that they all have a basic outline and key points.  You can get a lot of mileage out one little presentation.  Here’s what I did to expand this presentation into multiple pieces of content without reinventing the wheel:

  1. Uploaded the presentation to SlideShare, branded accordingly of course!  You can view the slide deck here.
  2. Created graphics from the main quotes that I spent time finding for the presentation.  These graphics were split into individual tweets and posts of the quote alone.
  3. Created multiple blog articles out of the main sections of the presentation.  You can see all of these blogs on my website.  They are being distributed in the weeks following the presentation.

4.  Posted about the speaking gig the day of, thanking the professor and class for having me.

5.  Broke individual talking points or quotes that I said on the topic into social media posts and tweets over the two months after the presentation.

6.  Created 4-6 minute long videos where I’m talking about keys to content marketing.  Videos posted to Facebook, YouTube, and Periscope.

The initial ideas are already mapped out and I know exactly what I said and what was important.   You can get a lot of leverage out of one presentation you create and help make life a little easier for you and your content marketing!  Repurposing content into manageable chunks of content in various digital channels helps you reach your audience on topics that interest them and in ways that they resonate with.
